Global HIV Management: Access to Treatment and Innovation

This WHA side event convenes global health leaders, policymakers, civil society, and industry partners to examine how innovation in HIV treatment can translate into equitable, real-world access—particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This event aims to move the conversation from innovation to impact.

Objectives:

  • Highlight the HIV treatment access gap: Present current data on disparities in access to HIV treatment, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, and the impact of delayed or unequal adoption of new therapies on health outcomes.
  • Showcase treatment innovations: Feature advances in HIV care, including long-acting injectable therapies, improved formulations, and differentiated service delivery models aligned with updated WHO guidelines.
  • Promote multisectoral collaboration: Engage governments, multilateral organisations, civil society, and the private sector in joint efforts to accelerate equitable access to HIV treatment innovations.
  • Address implementation barriers: Discuss policy, regulatory, financing, procurement, and health system challenges that hinder the scale-up of innovative HIV treatments.
  • Encourage policy and investment action: Develop actionable recommendations for policymakers, donors, and implementers to prioritise HIV treatment access and innovation in national and global health strategies.
  • Community integration: Identify gaps and opportunities to strengthen the role of community actors in supporting implementation and integration of HIV services into primary healthcare systems.
